The period examinedis 1780-1940 in Europe and America and of course in Greece (focusing on Athens). The meaning and content of the "city" from the Middle Ages onwards are first analyzed, and then the different types of cities depending on their functions andspecial issues such as:
1) The perception that modern observers and scientists had about the city and the phenomenon of urbanization at the time of the explosion of the urban phenomenon in Western Europe.
2) The structure of the cities and how it changed due to the intense urbanization as well as the large renovation and reorganization projects that took place in the old centers of the metropoles.
3) The various functions and services hosted by cities. Special emphasis is given to the organization of public health services
4) Building conditions and different types of housing in Europe and USA.
5) The characteristics of urban populations and their demographic behavior (age structure, birth rate, mortality, urban diseases, etc.)
6) Finally, the different social strata that live in cities are studied in terms of their different lifestyles and habits.
